How Do Solar Panels Work?

The UK might not be known for its sunshine, but we get more than enough solar irradiance to make solar panels a great investment. It’s true that the stronger the sunlight, the more electricity you can generate – but even when it’s cloudy, there’s enough solar irradiance for solar panels to cover your needs; or at least partially.

We know solar panels are the future. Not only do they keep your costs down, but you’re also helping to generate renewable energy, so it’s good for the planet, too. This is how they work:

Light from the sun is made up of tiny particles called photons

Photons hit the solar panel, knocking electrons free of the silicon atoms within the solar cells.

These loose electrons are now free to move, creating an electric current from the positive and negative charges now present. They pass through the layers of the solar cell.

The electric current flows to the edge of the panel into a conductive wire, which leads to the inverter.

The inverter converts the direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC), which is used to provide power for your home.

The electricity is then distributed around your existing electrical installation. If the solar panels are generating more power than your home requires, this surplus electricity is exported back to the utility grid. Exported electricity is recorded by a meter, and you will be paid for each kWh you export.
